Everything You Need to Know Before Buying a Used Trailer

Buying a used trailer is a long-term investment and educating yourself on what to look for will go a long way in ensuring your purchase is a good one.  At Semi Service, we know trailers! We’ve put together the 10 things to look for when buying a used trailer.

Frame

The materials and design used to construct the frame of any trailer make a huge difference in its overall integrity and stability.

There are three main types of steel used to construct trailer frames:

  • box tubing
  • channel iron
  • angle iron

Box tubing, channel iron or a combination of both are good choices but avoid trailers made with angle iron. This type of steel tends to twist and flex, which causes a reduction in stability.

 Tongue Length

Tongue length is critical for keeping the trailer stable. Look for trailers with longer tongues, which reduce the amount of weight that needs to rest on the ball and make trailers easier to steer and back up.

Coupler

The coupler attaches the trailer to your vehicle, so avoid any that show signs of wear and tear such as twisting, bending, or poor attachment fit.

Wiring

Inspect all wiring that passes through the trailer frame and make sure that there are grommets in place to protect them. Wires that are not protected by grommets are prone to shorting out.

Taillights

Look for well-protected LED taillights, which are maintenance free and twice as bright as the incandescent type. LED lights also use about half the power that incandescent lights do.

 Axle

Beware of any trailer made with used motorhome axles, which are on most trailers with a wheel size of 14 ½”. Motorhome axles are stiff and make it difficult to find replacement wheels, tires, and wheel bearings.

 Fenders

Ensure that all fenders are tough and stable and able to withstand the weight of an average sized person. Flimsy fenders can lead to breakage or even injury if they are stood on, which is bound to happen at some point as you hook and unhook your trailer.

 Welds

Look for welds that are well blended and consistent. Ugly or worn looking welds are an indicator that they are weak and poorly made.

 Fit and Finish

Overall fit and finish can tell you a lot about the condition of the trailer. Keep a lookout for any exposed sharp corners, poorly applied caulking or general sloppiness in build and design.

When going to check out any used trailer, be sure to take a checklist of all of the above with you to help you in your inspection and decision-making. Also, before you make your final purchase, be sure to ask the seller for any warranties and pertinent documentation, such as title and bill of sale.
